How it works

Nobody should have to build a system before writing down their first idea. Paper opens on a ready page and tidies itself up as you use it. Try each part below.

Type / and choose a heading, a list, a task or a piece of code. If you already know Markdown you can type it directly, like - for a list. If you don't, you'll never need to learn.

Click the empty line and type /

Paper and Paper

From the paper notebook, we kept

  • Open and write, without choosing a format first.
  • One page at a time, with nothing blinking beside it.
  • The feeling that the notebook is yours.

What Paper adds

  • Find any note by typing a word.
  • Link pages and see who cites whom.
  • The same notebook on the phone and the computer.
  • A copy in your Drive, so nothing gets lost.

Privacy

When you connect Paper to Drive, each page becomes a file in a folder of yours. The text leaves your device and goes straight there, without passing through our servers. We have no way to read, analyze or sell what you write.

A Paper folder in your Drive

You see the files, back them up however you like and delete them whenever you want.

Password pages

Want not even Drive to be able to read it? Lock the page with a password. Paper encrypts it on your device before saving.

The password is yours alone

The password never leaves your device. If it's lost, nobody can recover it, not even us. That's why Paper asks you to confirm this before locking.

The path of your text

  1. 1You writeThe page is saved on the device right away, with or without internet.
  2. 2Paper sends it to your DriveWhen there's a connection, the file goes straight to the Paper folder in your Google account.
  3. 3The other device fetches the new versionPhone and computer read from the same Drive. If both changed the same page, you choose which one stays.

Your files

Each page is a .md file, plain text that has existed for decades. It opens in Notepad, in any editor or in whatever app you're using ten years from now.

Password pages stay encrypted even in the file. To take everything as .md, it's one click on “Export”.

8 pages · 11 links

Light gray dots are pages with no links at all. Sometimes that's where the forgotten idea is.

For people who write

One page per class, one link per concept.

Concepts that show up in several subjects get their own page and receive links from every class. The night before the exam, search finds everything and the bottom of each concept shows where it came up.

pages that get many links

For teams

Create a group, invite people by link and write together on the same page. If you want Paper just for yourself, turn all of this off in Settings and the screen stays clean.

Everyone on the same page

Two people in the same paragraph at the same time, with no conflict. Each person's color shows on the block they're editing.

Invites with deadlines

Links that last an hour or a month, with a usage limit. Cancel it and the link stops working right away.

Four roles and that's it

Owner, admin, editor or read only. Easy to understand at first sight, no permissions table.

End-to-end encrypted

The text leaves each device already scrambled. The server stores and delivers it, but doesn't read it. When someone leaves, the group key changes.

Board, table and timeline in the page

Kanban with drag and drop, a table that adds itself up, a timeline with bars and charts. All inside the note, no other tool.

No chat

What's agreed stays written on the page, where everyone can find it later. Conversation stays in the chat app you already use.

During the beta: up to 100 people and 200 MB per group, free.

Day to day

Without internet, you keep writing.

On a plane, on the subway or with the Wi-Fi dropping. Paper saves on the device and syncs when the connection comes back.

Phone and computer in the same notebook.

Edited the same text on both at the same time? Paper keeps both versions and asks which one stays. Nothing disappears without you knowing.

Pages inside pages.

Drag a page into another and it becomes a folder. The sidebar shows everything as a tree.

A calm screen.

Gray, white and your text. Buttons show up when you need them and get out of the way when you go back to writing.

Tags in the middle of the text.

Write #reading anywhere on the page. Later, just search for it.

Rename without fear.

Changed a page's name? Every link pointing to it changes too. Try it in the demo up there.

Keyboard

The mouse still works, of course. The shortcuts are here for those who prefer them. Most already work in the demo up there.
